Who Is the Angel of March, and Why Do the Old Tables Start With It?

Malchidiel and his spellings in two historical sign tables and a modern guide, and why a scale that opens at the March equinox puts early March in the Pisces row

Malchidiel is the angel of March in the historical tables. Lansdowne MS 1203 and Agrippa’s Book II both place him first among the angels of the twelve signs, in the row for Aries and March, while the modern Angels of the Months guide spells him Machidiel without citing a source.

The lists open with March because they open with Aries, and Aries starts at the March equinox. A birthday before about 21 March falls in the Pisces row.

Malchidiel, Machidiel or Malahidael: which spelling belongs to which source?

Malchidiel is the March name in both historical witnesses. Page 52 of Joseph Peterson’s edition of Lansdowne MS 1203, The Veritable Clavicles of Solomon, gives its first row to Aries, the month of March, the angel Malchidaël and the capacity of eyesight.

Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult Philosophy sets out a scale of the number twelve in Book II, chapter 14. Malchidiel comes first in its row of “Twelve Angels ruling over the signs,” standing above Aries in the row of signs and March in the row of months.

That pairing comes from position in a grid; no sentence in the chapter joins the three words.

The manuscript keeps one form for this angel. The table on page 52 and a later list of the characters of the sign angels on pages 59-60 both write Malchidaël, while Peterson’s English version of that later list prints Malchidiel, the form Agrippa uses.

The modern Angels of the Months guide at Archangels and Angels heads its March entry “Machidiel (AKA: Malahidael)” and ties the month to stamina, courage and starting new projects. Its editor adds that no references were supplied with the text, so the guide gives no witness for either spelling.

Sorted this way, Malchidaël and Malchidiel belong to the historical witnesses, and Machidiel and Malahidael appear only in the modern guide. None of these sources says when the shorter forms entered circulation, so calling them a different angel, or a proven misreading, goes further than the evidence.

Why do the angel-and-sign tables begin with March?

They begin with Aries, and Aries begins at the March equinox. In Western tropical astrology the sign starts where the Sun stands at that equinox, which falls between 19 and 21 March depending on the year.

All three older texts consulted here open at the same point. Lansdowne MS 1203 puts Aries and March in its first row, Agrippa’s row of months runs from March to February, and the supplement to chapter 5 of the Sefer Yetzirah, found in some versions of that Hebrew text, starts with Aries and the Hebrew month Nisan.

The “March” in each row is therefore the month in which that row’s sign begins. Because Aries starts around 21 March, the first twenty days or so of the month belong to Pisces, the last row in both tables, whose angel is Barchiel.

About 1 to 20 MarchPiscesBarchiel
About 21 to 31 MarchAriesMalchidiel

The boundary moves by a day with the equinox from one year to the next. A birthday on 19, 20 or 21 March needs its year before a sign-based reading can place it.

This is how a tool that works from tropical signs can return the February name for a 5 March birthday while a month list returns Malchidiel. The two answers follow different rules, and neither identifies a personal guardian.

Where do the “angel of truth” title and the head come from?

The head comes from Agrippa. His scale of twelve has a row of “Twelve principall members,” and the head stands in the Aries and March column, so it pairs a body part with a sign rather than describing anything Malchidiel does.

Lansdowne MS 1203 gives the same row a different attribute. Its column for the capacity of each angel, “and the things over which they have power,” sets eyesight beside Malchidaël.

The supplement to chapter 5 of the Sefer Yetzirah pairs Aries with speech instead. Lansdowne’s column draws on a closely matching set of twelve faculties in another order, so the faculty given to Aries depends on which list you follow, and no source examined here says the manuscript took its column from the Hebrew text.

Neither the three older texts nor the modern monthly guide calls Malchidiel or Machidiel an angel of truth. The title appears on modern profile pages without a cited text, so it reports what those pages say about the name and has no counterpart in the tables.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Malchidiel named in the Bible?

None of the texts examined here cites a biblical passage for it. Malchidiel reaches readers through the magical tables of Lansdowne MS 1203 and Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult Philosophy.

Does a March 29 birthday have the same angel as March 3?

Under a month list, yes, both dates return Malchidiel. A tropical-sign reading puts 29 March in Aries with Malchidiel and 3 March in Pisces with Barchiel, and the guardian angel calculator reduces the full date to a number and shows each step; it returns no name from these tables.
