Guardian Angels

Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist and New Age teaching on guardian angels each have a page. Other pages cover prayer, meditation and journaling, the signs people report, and lists that assign angels by birth date.

Christians differ on how personal the care is. Catholic and Orthodox churches teach one guardian angel for each person, while many Protestants affirm angelic protection in general, as John Calvin did.

Jewish texts describe angels that guard people, including the Talmud's two ministering angels who accompany everyone, but they give no binding teaching that each person has one named angel for life.

In Islam, Qur'an 13:11 describes angels who guard each person by Allah's command, and requests are made to Allah rather than to them.

Birth-month pages cover all twelve months, each comparing what the old sign tables and modern guides give that month. For January, the modern Archangels and Angels list gives Gabriel or Cambiel, while Lansdowne MS 1203, a historical magical table, gives Garubiel.

Finding out your guardian angel's name sets birth-date tables beside meditation methods and Catholic guidance, and guardian angel prayers compares the Catholic, Orthodox and Lutheran forms for morning and night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Bible use the phrase "guardian angel"?

No. The phrase comes from later Christian writing and prayer, such as the Latin Angele Dei, whose first line calls the angel custos, meaning guardian.

Can you find out your guardian angel's name?

No method can confirm one. Kabbalistic tables give one of 72 names by birth date, New Age teachers suggest asking in meditation, and Catholic guidance discourages any angel name except Michael, Gabriel and Raphael.

Why does it feel like someone is there when nobody is?

Researchers call this the feeling of a presence. Exhaustion, grief, isolation, illness and the minutes either side of sleep make it more likely, and the sensation itself does not identify who or what was there.

When is the Feast of the Guardian Angels?

October 2 in the Roman Catholic calendar. Orthodox churches honor all the angels together on November 8.
