Guardian Angels

Is Ambriel the Angel for Everyone Born in May?

How a month table gives every May birthday to Ambriel, and why a zodiac-sign lookup gives the first three weeks of May to Asmodel

Someone born on May 10 can search for a May guardian angel and come back with two names: Ambriel from one list, Asmodel from another. Both names come from the same historical tables, read by two different rules.

Lansdowne MS 1203 and Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy put Ambriel in the row that joins May to the sign Gemini. The tables never say which birthdays belong to Gemini.

Why do some May birthdays get Asmodel instead of Ambriel?

The contradiction often sits inside a single page of search results. One result tells readers that if they were born in May, Ambriel is their angel, while another gives Ambriel's Gemini dates as May 22 to June 21, which leaves out three weeks of May.

Both results rest on the same two tables. On page 52 of Peterson's edition of Lansdowne MS 1203 and in Agrippa's scale of the number twelve, each row joins one zodiac sign, one month and one angel, and the May row is Gemini with Ambriel.

Wikipedia's Astrological sign table starts Gemini on about May 22, so May 1 to about May 21 falls under Taurus, the sign the same tables give to Asmodel and April. The March page explains why each row's month is the month in which its sign begins.

A lookup that reads only the month gives Ambriel to every day in May. A lookup that reads the sign gives Asmodel to the first three weeks and Ambriel to the last ten days or so.

Two May birthdays under each rule
BirthdayRule: month rowRule: tropical sign
May 10May, so AmbrielTaurus, so Asmodel
May 28May, so AmbrielGemini, so Ambriel

Neither table gives a start date for any sign. A sign-based answer therefore takes its boundaries from astrology, while the angel tables supply only the name attached to each sign.

When two results disagree, the difference tells you which rule each site used, and it does not mean a May birthday has two guardians or none. The guardian angel calculator reduces the full date to a number and returns no name from these tables.

Which sources put Ambriel in the May row?

May has no competing spelling: every historical witness below writes Ambriel.

  • Lansdowne MS 1203, page 52 of Joseph Peterson's edition: Gemini, May and Ambriel, with the capacity column reading L'Odorat, the sense of smell.
  • The same manuscript, pages 59-60: Ambriel again in the list of characters of the angels of the signs, a spelling Peterson leaves uncorrected.
  • Agrippa, Three Books of Occult Philosophy, Book II, chapter 14: Ambriel third of the twelve angels ruling over the signs, in line with Gemini, May and the arms as principal member of the body.
  • Peterson's editorial note in the same edition of Lansdowne MS 1203: a cross-reference to The Magical Calendar, which gives characters for the angel of Gemini, named there as Ambriel.

All four tie Ambriel to Gemini first and reach May only through Gemini's row. For a May birthday, the evidence is that row: a sign, a month, a name, and a faculty or body part.

The modern Angels of the Months guide at Archangels and Angels gives the name as “Ambriel (AKA: Ambiel)” and offers no source for the second spelling. Its May entry describes spring, trees and shrubs in bloom, and the start of a new cycle of life.

Does the May table make Ambriel an angel of communication?

Neither historical table makes that link: Lansdowne MS 1203 gives Ambriel's row the sense of smell, and Agrippa's scale gives it the arms. The communication label and the gloss Energy of God appear on modern profile pages, and Ambriel's broader meaning is covered on the Ambriel name page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Catholic Church name Ambriel as a guardian angel?

No. The Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy (2001) discusses devotion to guardian angels in paragraph 216 and, in paragraph 217, discourages giving angels names other than Gabriel, Raphael and Michael, whose names scripture records.
