The 8888 message is one half of an older entry. Doreen Virtue's list in Healing with the Angels (1999) has no entry for four eights, but her entry for angel number 888 makes two points. Walmsley's 2010 list divided that entry between two lengths. Her 888 kept the warning that a phase is ending and added "great financial prosperity." Her 8888 took the tunnel and the harvest: "The 8888 number sequence may indicate that there is light at the end of the tunnel and in addition it is a message for you not to procrastinate when making your move or enjoying the fruits of your labour. Make the choices that please you. That is your reward."

Read on its own terms, the 8888 entry is about a difficult period ending and permission to use what it produced. It names no money, no date and no person. The reward it describes is the freedom to choose, which sits closer to the 5 at the end of the reduction than to the prosperity language most guides now attach to the number.

Why do I keep seeing 8888? Chosen phone numbers and a Burmese anniversary

No clock can show 8888, so four eights come from prices, phone numbers, number plates, receipts and counters, and many of those were chosen on purpose. In Chinese-speaking communities eights are picked for their prosperity sound: in 2003 Sichuan Airlines paid 2.33 million yuan for the phone number +86 28 8888 8888. A run of eights on a phone number may have been bought for exactly that sound.

8888 is also a date and a name. In Burma, now Myanmar, students planned a nationwide demonstration against military rule for 8 August 1988, which Wikipedia's account of the 8888 Uprising describes as "an auspicious date based on numerological significance." The uprising took its name from that date, and the official death toll of the crackdown was 350, against other estimates of 3,000 to 10,000, so for many Burmese readers 8888 is an anniversary before it is anything else.
