Why Do June Birthday Lists Name Muriel, Ambriel or Gabriel?
Muriel holds the June and Cancer row in the old sign tables; Ambriel arrives through the Gemini dates of early June, and Gabriel through a Cancer pairing those tables do not make
Three names circulate for June birthdays, and only Muriel sits in the June row of the old sign tables: Lansdowne MS 1203 and Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy both set Muriel beside June and the sign Cancer. Lists that name Ambriel or Gabriel are using other rules, a sort by zodiac sign or a modern pairing of Gabriel with Cancer.
Each name holds only under the rule that produced it, and none of the three rules identifies a personal guardian.

What do the old tables record for Muriel and June?
Muriel holds the fourth row of the sign table on page 52 of Joseph Peterson's edition of Lansdowne MS 1203: Cancer (L'Ecrevisse), June, and the capacity La Parole, speech.
The manuscript names Muriel again on page 60, in its list of characters of the angels of the signs, with the same spelling. Agrippa's scale of the number twelve (Three Books of Occult Philosophy, Book II, chapter 14) agrees, placing Muriel fourth of the twelve angels ruling over the signs, in line with Cancer, June and the breast.
The modern Angels of the Months guide at Archangels and Angels also gives June to Muriel, announces that “Summer is upon us,” and recommends feeling the grass under bare feet. Its editor notes that the guide's seasons appear to relate to the Northern Hemisphere only, and Wikipedia's sign table lists Cancer as a winter sign south of the equator.
How can one June birthday return three different angels?
Muriel is the answer when a list reads the month column, which gives one name to all thirty days of June. The other two names come from rules that set that column aside.
Ambriel comes from sorting by sign: Gemini runs to about June 21, and in both Lansdowne MS 1203 and Agrippa the Gemini row belongs to Ambriel, the May angel. The March page explains why each row's month is the month in which its sign begins.
One search result shows both rules in a single sentence, saying Muriel protects everyone born in June, whether Gemini or Cancer. By the tables' own rows, the Geminis among them would receive Ambriel.
Gabriel comes from a modern page that titles him “Angel of Cancer Zodiac (June 21-July 22).” Neither Lansdowne MS 1203 nor Agrippa makes that pairing, so its source lies outside the sign tables.
Both texts put Gabriel in another row. In Agrippa's scale and in Peterson's corrected reading of page 60, Gabriel is the angel over Aquarius and January, the row where the page 52 table writes Garubiel.
| Name | Rule behind it | Source for the rule | June dates it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muriel | Month column | Lansdowne MS 1203, pages 52 and 60; Agrippa, Book II, chapter 14 | June 1 to 30 |
| Ambriel | Tropical sign: Gemini | Gemini row of the same tables, with modern sign dates | About June 1 to 21 |
| Muriel | Tropical sign: Cancer | Cancer row of the same tables, with modern sign dates | About June 22 to 30 |
| Gabriel | Modern Cancer pairing | Neither table; both place Gabriel over Aquarius | June 21 onward, as those pages date it |
A June 10 birthday is therefore Muriel's by month and Ambriel's by sign. A June 25 birthday is Muriel's under both table rules and Gabriel's only on pages that use the Cancer pairing.
Does Muriel mean “scent of God”?
None of the sources behind the June row translates the name. Lansdowne MS 1203 and Agrippa list Muriel without a meaning, and the modern monthly guide gives none either.
In Lansdowne MS 1203 the sense of smell belongs to the row before June: L'Odorat sits beside Gemini, May and Ambriel. Muriel's own row reads La Parole, speech.
The modern guide's June entry does mention “the scents of the summer flowers,” as part of its advice to spend time outdoors. It ties that line to the season and does not offer it as the meaning of Muriel's name.
Without a cited text behind it, “scent of God” remains a popular gloss that the June sources do not support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Muriel one of the twelve angels at the gates of the heavenly city?
Agrippa's chapter on the number twelve says that “twelve Angels are set over the twelve gates of the City,” in the same chapter that sets out the twelve angels ruling over the signs, but it names none of the gate angels. The edition's note ties that line to Revelation 21:12, so calling Muriel a gate angel needs a source that neither text supplies.
