Both readings follow the same method: each digit brings a list of qualities, and the combined number turns those qualities into encouragement. The arithmetic can be checked, since 7 + 0 does equal 7. The promise of reward cannot, and it adds nothing to a decision that the decision's own facts would not already supply.

What the convention does describe is a kind of attention. Someone who notices 70 during a stretch of reading, prayer or time alone is in the situation Decoz's 7 describes. Walmsley's zero adds potential and choice, which places the emphasis on a decision that is still open.

Why does the Bible use seventy for families, elders and lifetimes?

In the Bible, seventy usually counts a complete group or a complete span of time. The household of Jacob that enters Egypt numbers seventy (Genesis 46:27; Exodus 1:5), and that family becomes the people of the Exodus story. Seventy elders go up Sinai with Moses (Exodus 24:1), and in Numbers 11:16 God tells Moses to gather seventy elders to share the burden of leading the people.

Psalm 90:10 is the source of "threescore years and ten", the King James wording for a full human life. Jeremiah's seventy years measure the exile in Babylon, and Daniel 9 opens by rereading Jeremiah's figure before it speaks of seventy weeks.

Later Jewish law kept the elders' number. The Mishnah (Sanhedrin 1:6) reports Rabbi Yehuda's view that the Great Sanhedrin should have seventy judges, modelled on the elders of Numbers 11, while the majority counted Moses as well and set the court at seventy-one. The seventy sent out by Jesus in Luke 10:1 are less certain: the NRSV Updated Edition prints seventy-two and notes that other ancient manuscripts read seventy, a disagreement that gives 72 its strongest biblical claim.

Seventy does come near angels twice, and both times the subject is the exile. In Zechariah 1:12 the angel of the Lord asks how long God will withhold mercy from Jerusalem, "with which you have been angry these seventy years". In Daniel 9, the angel Gabriel comes to Daniel, who has been reading Jeremiah's seventy years, and declares that "seventy weeks are decreed" for the city.

What these passages share is scale. Seventy counts a household, a council, a lifetime or an exile, and even when an angel speaks the number, the message concerns a whole city rather than one person who has noticed a figure.

Does "seventy times seven" in Matthew 18:22 mean 70?

No. When Peter asks whether forgiving a brother seven times is enough, Jesus answers "seventy-seven times" in the NRSV Updated Edition, with a footnote giving "seventy times seven" as the alternative translation, and the King James Version prints "seventy times seven". Either way the count is 77 or 490, not 70.

The Greek wording matches the Septuagint of Genesis 4:24, where Lamech boasts that if Cain is avenged sevenfold, he will be avenged seventy-sevenfold. The Revised English Version commentary reads Matthew's figure as that same 77, so Jesus answers Lamech's measure of revenge with an equal measure of forgiveness.

The verse multiplies Peter's seven. Although the phrase contains the word seventy, it gives the number 70 no meaning of its own, and its count belongs with the sevens.

Love, twin flames and money: what an amplified 7 looks like in practice

Relationship readings of 70 come from the 7, and Decoz's 7 is a private digit, drawn to solitude and at risk of detachment. If the zero amplifies the 7, as Walmsley says, it amplifies that side too. Astrology.com's entry says that in a twin-flame connection 70 means both people are growing spiritually and the bond is strengthening, and that new love is on the horizon; neither claim rests on anything beyond the entry itself.

The 7's reading fits a relationship in which one person has gone quiet to think. The question it raises is whether that distance is producing something the other person can see, or has turned into withdrawal, and only a conversation between the two people can answer it.

At work and with money, the 7 is the researcher's digit and the zero adds only emphasis, so the reading points to study before commitment: the report read to the end, the contract checked line by line. Walmsley's promise that rewards are coming is the part with no support, because a sighting changes no balance, salary or deadline.

Is it a sign when 70 keeps appearing?

Seventy is an ordinary number in daily life. It appears on speed-limit signs, birthday cards, prices, percentages, page numbers and bus routes, and once it has caught someone's attention each of those appearances registers where it once passed unnoticed.

The linguist Arnold Zwicky named this the frequency illusion in a 2005 Language Log post: once you have noticed something, you think it happens all the time, because you now notice nearly every occurrence.
