For drivers in the United States the answer may be the fuel pump: the US Energy Information Administration describes regular gasoline, the lowest grade on sale, as generally 87 octane. Anyone who fills up weekly sees the number on every visit.

A number also becomes easier to notice once it means something. After a raise, a sale or an award, a number linked with success fits the question already on a reader's mind, and the attention it draws is what the APA calls selective attention: concentrating on some stimuli at the expense of others. What kind of belonging does Psalm 87 describe?
